Dr. Xu Tang has been deeply involved in research related to high-resolution Earth observation for many years. Addressing the critical need for understanding and applying high-resolution remote sensing imagery, he has focused on the international academic frontiers of complex image content mining and pattern recognition. Supported by key and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, key technological projects from the Ministry of Education, and research initiatives under the "13th Five-Year Plan," he has conducted in-depth studies on the intelligent interpretation of remote sensing images, solving numerous bottleneck issues in the field. Centering on image content retrieval, Dr. Tang has proposed innovative methods such as multi-scale distance measures for remote sensing images, graph-based re-ranking techniques, unsupervised deep feature learning algorithms, and large-scale image hashing feature learning methods. These research outcomes have significantly enhanced the intelligence and accuracy of information extraction and interpretation in remote sensing imagery. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Second Prize of the Natural Science Award by the Chinese Association of Automation in 2022.
