Desc[ant]ription: This patent presents a method for transmission mode selection of stations in dense wireless local area network. This method considers two-hop association to the Access Points (APs) for the wireless stations (STAs) with poor single-hop links to improve the throughput, and associating with more than one AP so as to balance the load. It is implemented in the following steps.
Step1: Context information aggregation. Each station measures context information periodically. The context information includes the list of neighbor stations, one-hop achievable APs, two-hop achievable APs, and transmission data rate to the neighbor stations and the one-hop and two-hop achievable APs. Each station transmits the context information to its currently associated AP. APs exchange these information and also broadcasts to their stations.
Step 2: Transmission mode selection. Based on the received context information obtained in step1, each STA conduct the following calculations and selections:
(2a) If the STA has one-hop achievable AP(s), then it calculates the throughput it can get by associating each of these APs in one-hop, records the maximum throughput, T1,max ,and the index of the AP, k1 , by associating which T1,max is achiveved.
(2b) If the STA has two-hop achievable AP(s), then it calculates the throughput it can get by associating each of these APs in two-hop with different neighboring stations as the relay, records the maximum throughput , T2,max, and the index of the AP, k2 , by associating which T2,max is achieved, and also records the index of the station, m, with which as the relayT2,max is achieved.
(2c) If the STA does not have any achievable APs, then return to Step1. Otherwise, the STA compare T1,max and T2,max , records the larger one, denoted as Tmax, and go to Step 3.
Step 3: Transmission mode configuration. If Tmax=T1,max , then the STA associates or re-associates AP k1 and transimits data in one-hop. If Tmax=T2,max , then the STA associates AP k2 and transimits in two-hop with STA m as its relay.
