Introduction

Dr. Kuan Fang REN is full professor at University of Rouen normandy (France). He obtained his bachelor degree in physics from Shaanxi Normal University and Master of Science in radio physics from Xidian University. He had had 4 year teaching experience in these two universities before joint the mixed research unity “CORIA/UMR 6614 CNRS” in Rouen University (France) in 1990 as a visiting scholar. From 1991 to 1995, he prepared his PhD thesis in the same research institute. After 5 years contractual researcher, always in the same institute, he obtained in 1998 the permanent position “Maître de Conférences” (equivalent to associate professor) in Rouen University. He got the full professor position in 2008 and promoted to the first class professor in 2015.

His main interests of research can be resumed as: 1). Theoretical research on the interaction of shaped laser beam and regular shaped particles, 2). Development of optical techniques for measurement of small particles and its application in the fluid mechanics and combustion. 3). Theoretical prediction of radiation pressure and torque exerted on a particle by a shaped beam. 4). Development of a new model – Vectorial Complex Ray Model (VCRM) – for describing the scattering of an object of arbitrary shape and a wave. He has published more than 90 papers in the scientific journals and about 110 communications in national and international conferences.  He has developed 6 scientific softwares in his research fields and given more than 30 invited conferences in the universities and research laboratories all around the world. His is now the coordinator of the French national project ANR AMO-COPS (Advanced Methods for Optical Characterization of Complex Particle Systems) which involves 4 CNRS (French National Scientific Research Center) laboratories and aims at the extension of his VCRM model and its application in development of metrology in two phase fluid.

He is member of scientific committee of the research institute CORIA, expert of 111 project of Beijing Institute of Technology, vice president of “Association des Scientifiques et Ingénieurs Chinois En France (ASICEF)”, president of Xidian University Alumni Association in France (XDUAAF).

He was vice president of the commission of sections 30-60-62 (optics in dilute media, mechanics and energy) at Rouen university, one of the “hundred-talents of Shaanxi”, president of the “conference of the presidents of (more than 20) Associations of Chinese scholars in France”, president of ASICEF.

He promotes the French-Chinese research collaboration since more than 20 years. Thanks to his active contributions, his university and his institute have established strong relations with several Chinese universities.

Research Interests

Theoretical research:

  1. Theories of Light Scattering by Small Particles, specially in the scattering of shaped beam by a sphere, a spheroid or a cylindrer;
  2. Extension of geometrical optics to object of complex form by taking into account the effects of interference, divergence and diffraction;
  3. Theoretical prediction of radiation pressure, torques exerted on a sphere or a spheroid by an arbitraily shaped laser beam.

Experimental research:

  • Extinction spectrometry and applications to the measurement of wet steam, soot/aggregat particles ...
  • Particle imaging and its applications in shadow Doppler velocimetry, Glaire Spot Phase Doppler Anemometry, numerical holography ...
  • Refractometry of rainbow and the applications in the study of liquid jet instability, measurement of the optical or me[ant]tal fiber,
  • Phase Doppler, LDV ...
